Beginner · Strumming Patterns & Rhythm
Rhythm is what makes a song feel right. Chords are only half the picture.
▸ THE BASICS • Down-strokes (⬇) — strum toward the floor • Up-strokes (⬆) — strum back up • Keep your strumming hand moving like a pendulum, even on silent beats
▸ THREE PATTERNS TO MASTER
- All downs: ⬇ ⬇ ⬇ ⬇ (count 1 2 3 4)
- Down-up: ⬇⬆ ⬇⬆ ⬇⬆ ⬇⬆
- The "classic": ⬇ ⬇⬆ ⬆⬇⬆ (1, 2-and, and-3-and) — fits countless songs
▸ KEEPING TIME • Tap your foot on each beat • Use a metronome or ReanChord's tempo feel — start at 60 BPM • It is better to play a simple pattern in time than a fancy one out of time
▸ DYNAMICS Vary loud and soft, let chords ring in slow songs, mute with your palm for a tighter feel.
Practice strumming one chord until the pattern is automatic, then add chord changes.
Next: barre chords.
