Basic Strumming Patterns for Khmer Ballads

Chords are only half of playing a song — the other half is rhythm. Here are simple strumming patterns to get you started, especially for slower Khmer ballads.

Start with all downstrokes

The simplest pattern is one steady downstroke per beat: down, down, down, down. It's boring but rock-solid, and it teaches you to keep time. Play it slowly and evenly.

Add upstrokes

Next, fill in the gaps with upstrokes: down, down-up, down, down-up. Your hand keeps moving in a steady motion; you only touch the strings on the beats you want. This gentle pattern suits most slow ballads beautifully.

The classic ballad feel

A very common pattern is down, down-up, up-down-up. Count it as "one, two-and, and-three-and." Don't rush it — a relaxed, even rhythm always sounds better than a fast, uneven one.

Tips

  • Keep your strumming hand loose and always moving, like a pendulum.
  • Let the rhythm breathe; ballads are about feel, not speed.
  • Practise the pattern on a single chord first, then add chord changes.

Next steps

Pair your strumming with clean chord changes and try it on a slow song from our starter list.
