Beginner · Your First Open Chords

Open chords use open (unfretted) strings and are the foundation of most songs.

▸ START WITH THESE 5 • Em — easiest: fingers 2 & 3 on the A and D strings (2nd fret) • C — the classic chord • G — full, ringing sound • D — bright; only strum the top 4 strings • Am — the most common minor chord

▸ TIPS FOR CLEAN CHORDS • Press firmly with fingertips, just behind the fret • Keep fingers curved so they don't mute other strings • Strum slowly and check each string rings clearly

▸ CHANGING CHORDS Switching is the hardest part at first. Practice the move, not just the shapes: • Pick TWO chords (e.g. Em → C) and switch back and forth slowly • Look for a common or "anchor" finger that stays down • Count "1-2-3-4" and change on beat 1 every time

▸ FIRST SONGS Many Khmer and pop songs use only G, C, D, Em, Am. Search ReanChord for songs in the key of C or G and play along slowly.

Next: strumming and rhythm.
