Barre chords let you play any chord anywhere on the neck using movable shapes.

▸ WHAT IS A BARRE? You use one finger (usually the index) to press multiple strings across a fret, acting like a movable nut.

▸ THE TWO ESSENTIAL SHAPES • E-shape (root on the 6th string): barre at fret 1 = F, fret 3 = G, fret 5 = A … • A-shape (root on the 5th string): barre at fret 1 = Bb, fret 3 = C, fret 5 = D … Move the same shape up the neck to change keys — no new shapes to memorize.

▸ GETTING A CLEAN BARRE • Roll the index finger slightly onto its bony side • Keep the finger close to the fret • Thumb low and centered behind the neck for leverage • Build strength slowly — start with mini-barres (2–3 strings)

▸ WHY THEY MATTER Barre chords unlock minor, 7th and sus chords all over the neck, and let you play songs in their original key. They are the gateway to intermediate playing.

Next: using a capo.
