Advanced · Extended Chords & Voicings
Beyond basic triads, richer chords add colour and emotion. These appear often in modern Khmer ballads and worship songs.
▸ SEVENTH CHORDS • Dominant 7 (G7) — bluesy, wants to resolve to the 1 • Major 7 (Cmaj7) — dreamy, soft • Minor 7 (Am7) — smooth, mellow
▸ SUS & ADD CHORDS • sus2 / sus4 — replace the 3rd for an open, unresolved sound (Dsus4 → D is a classic move) • add9 (Cadd9) — adds sparkle without changing the chord's quality
▸ SLASH CHORDS (INVERSIONS) C/E or G/B put a different note in the bass. Use them to create smooth, stepwise bass lines (e.g. C – G/B – Am).
▸ VOICE LEADING When changing chords, move each note the shortest distance. Smooth voice leading sounds professional and is easier to play. Look for shared notes between chords and keep them.
▸ VOICINGS UP THE NECK The same chord can be played in many places. Higher voicings sound brighter; pair them with a capo or barre shapes for arranging two guitars.
